Ask most cold-store operators how to freeze product faster and the answer is usually "more refrigeration" — a bigger plant, more capacity, more electricity. But in most cold rooms, the real bottleneck isn't the refrigeration at all. It's airflow.
When product is stacked in solid layers on a pallet, cold air can only reach the outside edges. The centre of the load stays warmer for longer, so freezing times stretch out, energy is wasted, and some product may not reach temperature evenly at all. You end up running the plant harder to compensate for a problem the plant didn't cause.
This is where freezer spacers — also called separators — come in.
A freezer spacer is a rigid, open-profile panel placed between layers of palletised product. The openings in the panel create controlled channels that let cold air move across and through the stack rather than only around it. In effect, they turn a solid block of product into a stack that air can pass through.
The principle has been used in cold stores internationally for more than 30 years — and it's simple physics: better air contact means faster heat transfer.
Not all spacers are equal. Key considerations:
Freezer spacers aren't a replacement for racking or plastic crates in every situation. But where product is palletised in layers, they offer a practical, lower-cost way to improve the performance of existing refrigeration — without the capital expense and disruption of a plant upgrade.
Before investing in more refrigeration, it's worth asking a simpler question: is cold air actually reaching your product? For many cold stores, the cheapest way to freeze faster and use less energy isn't a new plant at all — it's better airflow.
